Gracie Evans Grimes interview with Kessler Cannon of KBND radio

Audiobook
Fifteen minute oral history with Gracie Evans Grimes, member of an early Oregon pioneer family. Gracie was born on a homestead near Prineville and rode to school in Prineville on horseback. Later she married and moved to Bend, where she and her husband had a dairy and milk route. Gracie also discusses the time of the vigilantes in Central Oregon, when the sheepmen and cattlemen near Prineville were actively warring. Gracie recollects in particular two hangings that took place in those violent days. She also recalls happier early times in Prineville and the laborious process of conducting basic household chores on a homestead. Interview conducted by KBND in 1953 as part of an oral history series with the Deschutes County Pioneers. Originally broadcast on August 30, 1953. Photograph from A History of the Deschutes Country in Oregon by the Deschutes County Historical Society.
